Frequently Asked Questions

What is online notarization?

Online notarization is also called e-notarization, virtual notarization, remote commissioning or virtual commissioning.

It is the process for notarizing oaths, affidavits, statutory declarations and other documents using technology like web conferencing instead of meeting with a notary in person.

How much are your online notary services?

Our fees are $37.99 for the first notarization and $24.99 for each additional notarization, plus HST. A notarization consists of the notary's stamp and signature.

Please note these prices do not apply to wills and powers of attorney. For more information on remote witnessing of wills and powers of attorney, please visit our Wills & Powers of Attorney page.

What hours are your services available?

Our online notary services are available Sunday to Saturday from 7 am to 11 pm EST.

What do I need for an online notary session?

You will need:

  • A PDF or Word version of your document (if you only have a paper copy, you can scan it to create an electronic copy)

  • Access to a web camera (for example, on a smartphone, tablet or computer)

  • One piece of valid government-issued photo identification or two pieces of valid government-issued non-photo identification

You do not need to download any apps or programs to use our online notary services.

I'm located outside of Ontario / Canada. Can I still use your online notary services?

Absolutely! Notarize.ca can assist you wherever you are located, whether that's in Ontario, Canada, the United States, Europe or anywhere else in the world.

Can you mail me a printed copy of my notarized document with the embossed notary seal?

Definitely! We can mail a printed copy of your document with the notary's embossing seal anywhere in Ontario or the rest of the world. Our mailing fee is $20.99 plus HST and the cost of shipping.

What types of documents can be notarized online?

We can notarize many documents online, including:

  • Oaths and affidavits, like affidavits of identity, affidavits of income and OSAP affidavits

  • Statutory declarations, like statutory declarations of marital status, statutory declarations of common law status, statutory declarations for name change applications and statutory declarations of identity

Can more than one person join an online notary session?

Yes! We can assist you with documents that require multiple signatures in a single appointment. You can simply add the additional signer when you book your appointment.

If all signers are in the same location, they can join the online notary appointment from a single device.

If the signers are in different locations, they can join the same online video session with our secure videolink system. They will receive an email with the secure videolink at the scheduled appointment start time.

Are online notary services legal?

Yes, remote commissioning (online notary service or online notarization) of affidavits, oaths and statutory declarations is now permitted in Ontario.

On August 1, 2020, the Government of Ontario enacted O Reg 431/20, Administering Oath or Declaration Remotely, a regulation under the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act. This regulation makes remote commissioning in Ontario possible and sets out the requirements that must be met for remote commissioning.

Downtown Notary provides online notary services through Notarize.ca. Notarize.ca’s online notary process meets all of the requirements set out in O Reg 431/20. We are also following the Law Society of Ontario’s Best Practices for Remote Commissioning.
